Promoting First Relationships

Ms. Seboldt will present concepts critical to supporting and guiding caregivers in building nurturing and responsive relationships with children. The Promoting First Relationships curriculum offers service providers assistance in helping parents and other caregivers in meeting the social and emotional needs of young children.

Childhood Nutrition

With the growing concern of childhood obesity, parents are striving to provide their children with good nutrition. Beginning with infancy through adolescence, this seminar will explore the importance of proper nutrition and common childhood nutrition issues. It will also focus on ways to make mealtime more enjoyable for the entire family. Presenter Leah Sabato is a Clinical Dietitian with Children’s Medical Center of Dayton and a member of the American Dietetic Association.

Basic Needs and Common Health Concerns for Newborns

Welcoming a newborn into your home can be quite a challenge. This seminar will identify basic needs of newborns and discuss issues such as common health concerns, immunizations, and physical and cognitive development. Basic infant care, such as bathing, diapering, safe sleep, and tummy time will also be discussed. The presenter, Mari Jo Rosenbauer, has worked in the NICU at Children’s Medical Hospital for 23 years and is also a student in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at Wright State University. She is a licensed foster parent for Catholic Social Services and is also an adoptive parent.

Grief and Loss / Art Therapy

Grief can strike at any time and without warning. Having the tools to help you and your child through such a difficult time can help make the process healthier for you and your family. This presentation will review common grief symptoms, the grief wheel as a model for understanding the grieving process, and tasks of mourning which facilitate working through grief. Art therapy interventions will be highlighted as well as grief educational materials and community resources for grieving families. Jonathan Haag is a grief counselor for Hospice of Dayton and specializes in working with children through art therapy.

Maintaining a Healthy Marriage While Parenting

The presenter is Steve White, MSW, LISW, Mental Health Counselor at Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley. Steve is also an adoptive father.

Car Seat Safety

Over the years, state laws and requirements for car-seat use have changed. This seminar will provide information and instruction on car-seat safety to assure protection for children of all ages. The presenter, Melanie Abfalter, has been a registered nurse for 20 years and has worked in the Mother and Baby Unit at Kettering Hospital for 6 years. She has received specialized training in car seat safety. She is a licensed foster parent for Catholic Social Services and is also an adoptive parent.

Infant Sign Language

This seminar will teach participants signs and a variety of strategies and techniques in which to use them. Also discussed will be the cognitive, behavioral, intellectual, and emotional benefits of using sign language with babies.

Understanding Sexual Behaviors of Children

This presentation will highlight ways today’s children learn about sex. It will specifically focus on healthy sexual behavior for children; how they display sexuality at different stages of development; and what the warning signs are for inappropriate behavior. It will also look at relationships children have with their families, peers, and communities Practical advice and Montgomery County resources for parents will be provided. Mary Ann Robinson is a certified presenter at Montgomery County Job and Family Services.

Birthparent’s Perspectives

A panel of birthparents will share their experiences of working through a most important question: Am I ready to be a parent? Women and men who made their parenting or adoption plans will share insights into their thoughts as they strived to make the best decision for their children as well as themselves.
