Understanding Infant Adoption
Friday June 12, 9:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. 6 CEUs
Understanding Infant Adoption is specifically designed for professionals who provide services to pregnant women and teens. The training addresses cultural issues, working with teens, nondirective counseling techniques, Ohio laws, and current adoption practices. Lunch is included, please include special dietary needs prior to May 1st. Space is limited.

Ethics and the Professional
Friday July 10, 9:00 a.m. — 12:15 a.m. 3 CEUs
The types of complaints and problems that are commonly investigated by the Ohio State Counselor and Social Work Board are discussed using case study examples. Emphasis is on how to remain ethical and avoid problems in investigations

Testimony, Depositions and Subpoenas
Friday July 10, 1:15 — 4:30 p.m. 3 CEUs
This presentation’s objectives are to provide counselors and social workers a basic understanding of giving testimony both in court and in a deposition; it provides insight into effectiveness, techniques, and preparation. It also serves to educate the audience regarding the disclosure of records and privileged information. The presentation concludes with a discussion of ethical considerations and liability.

GLBT Counseling Issues
Friday July 17, 9:00 a.m. — 12:15 a.m. 3 CEUs
The presentation deals with specific issues that Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender individuals face in “coming out” or being “out” with friends, family and in other life settings, such as work, school or church. Discussion will include identity development, disclosure and safety issues, and public response. Also included are the local resources for additional education and support for GLBT individuals.

Child & Adolescent Grief and Loss
Friday July 17, 1:15 pm – 4:30 pm 3 CEUs
This presentation will include common grief symptoms for children and teens, the grief wheel as a model for understanding the grieving process, and children’s tasks of mourning which facilitate working through grief. A case study will be presented which will illustrate the application of grief education, several Art Therapy interventions, grief and family counseling. A brief summary of grief educational literature and community resources for grieving families will also be provided.

Treatment Issues in Sexual Abuse
Friday August 28, 9:00 am – 12:15 pm 3 CEUs
The training will focus on the dynamics of sexual abuse, diagnostic issues, common treatment issues, and some treatment techniques. A basic introduction to many of the dynamics present in sexual abuse will be given. In addition, the assessment of a child who has been abused will be presented. Treatment will be addressed as individual, family, and group therapy. The treatment approach is a cognitive-behavioral orientation that focuses on helping the child and family build on their strengths and incorporates specific activities related to sexual abuse.

Collaborative Caregiving: Partnering with Older Adults
Friday August 28 1:15 pm — 4:30 pm 3 CEUs

This training will focus on developing collaborative relationships with older adults who are in need of supportive services. Topics will include the transition from independence to interdependence, communication skills, and techniques for working with older persons to establish appropriate care plans.

Homelessness: Root Causes and Local Resources
Friday September 18, 9:00 am – 12:15 pm 3 CEUs
Those in attendance will better understand poverty and homelessness, as well as their many causes. The seminar will provide information about available local resources to assist men, women and families who are living without access to basic needs. The presentation will include an update on the Montgomery County/City of Dayton Homeless Solutions Policy Board and the Community’s 10-Year Plan to end homelessness.

Children in the Middle
Friday September 18, 1:15 pm — 4:30 pm 3 CEUs
“Children in the Middle” is a skills-based program that helps children and parents deal with the children’s reaction to divorce. It is a recognized Model Program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Results reported include: 57% reduction in litigation (e.g., child-access, change in custody, and/or child-support disputes), 30% to 53% reduction in parental conflict, 70% fewer school absences, 54% fewer physician visits by children, and 22% reduction in childreported stress.
